This Little Light of Mine

I’ve been at home with my girls and my husband for almost a week now. During this time, I have sat down at my desk again and again to write, to say something, to be an encouragement, and each time the cursor blinks and nothing happens.

What can I actually do that’s of help right now? What can I possibly say? Who am I to add my voice into the mix? I’ll let those with more experience and larger outlets do it. They’ve got it.

That’s the refrain that’s been playing in my head. Mix in uncertainty, a dash of fear, and a healthy heap of anxiety…and the tape gets stuck. Round and round those thoughts go. Freezing out words or actions. Anyone else feeling the same?

And then this hit me…

This little light of mine…I’m gonna let it shine.

A song from my childhood. A song I taught my girls when they were much smaller.

This little light of mine…I’m gonna let it shine.

Let is shine.

Let it shine.

Let is shine.

Right now. For most of us. It is that simple. We just need to let our lights shine in a way that brightens the paths of others.

By itself my light might not feel as useful as I would hope, but together, TOGETHER, when I let my light shine along with yours, we have the opportunity to really make a difference.

If we all choose to lift our lights high, to let them shine, we can push the darkness out and keep our eyes fixed on what matters most during this time - loving our neighbors.

There is no one person that has all the right answers. There is no one person that can fix the situation we are in. But, the power of our collective lights strung together is real and can make all the difference in the outcomes for so many.

Let your light shine by staying home to keep others safe.
Let your let shine by holding your children close and teaching them math and reading.
Let your light shine by being patient.
Let your light shine by leaving a few bananas behind for someone else.
Let your let shine by reaching out to others who might be alone.
Let your light shine by answering the small calls to step-up and love others.

It might not feel like much, but when we all do it, each light that shines in this way, creates a symphony of light that is blinding.

That’s what I hope for all of us. That we all know that what we do matters, that what we say matters, and that if we keep our eyes and our ears open to the ways in which we can let our lights shine it will make all the difference as we walk through this hard time.

Let us walk together with our lights held high and keeping singing in our hearts…let it shine…let it shine…let it shine!
